- Refugee Project While refugees from the tragic civil war in Syria fill the contemporary news, in fact all over the world people feel forced to flee their homes of origin. The reasons people leave vary, including famine, civil unrest, persecution, and the like.
- Peace Project The Global Peace Index (GPI), currently in its ninth edition (2015), is a project of the Institute for Economics and Peace (http://economicsandpeace.org/). The report ranks the nations of the world according to their level of peacefulness. The index is composed of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources and ranks 162 independent states, covering 99.6 per cent of the world's population. The index gauges global peace using three broad themes: the level of safety and security in society, the extent of domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarisation.
- The Statistics of Insurgency What can we learn about levels of violence from an analysis of quantifiable descriptors of a country or region? Over the course of the semester, we will be conducting a statistical analysis of populace descriptors to determine if they offer predictors of violence/the probability of the violence. In addition, we will be analyzing the data to determine if one, or more, of the specific descriptors reveal trends towards violence, and/or if certain descriptors offer clues to such matters as the size of attacks and the number of attacks. Finally, it is possible that our analysis will offer insights we had not considered.
